Lucas and Paula’s relationship is struggling; it’s been a long-standing issue. So, Paula decides to go to a wedding in Spain with a friend and… ends up staying there. Their 8-year-old daughter, Lotte, is inconsolable. Meanwhile, Lucas starts a relationship with the mother of Lotte’s friend, but then?
Then, Lotte falls seriously ill with meningitis. She eventually recovers, and slowly, a sense of normalcy returns to their lives.
Paula wants nothing more to do with them and asks for a divorce, leaving Lucas with full custody of Lotte. But when Paula later sends a lawyer to fight for custody, Lucas’s world is turned upside down. He fights back and wins, yet he still allows Paula visitation rights, permitting Lotte to spend vacations in Spain with her mother.
When Lucas exhibits his paintings and sculptures, he meets the gallery director and is completely smitten. Only after some business difficulties does he realize that she’s the woman he—and Lotte—wants to build a life with.
